What is Moxifloxacin or Avelox?

Avelox® (Moxifloxacin hydrochloride) is a synthetic broad spectrum antibacterial agent and is available as Avelox Tablets for oral administration. Avelox (Moxifloxacin hydrochloride) is prescribed to treat sinus and lung infections. It kills bacteria that can cause sinusitis, pneumonia, and secondary infections in chronic bronchitis. It also fights skin infections caused by staph or strep.

Indications

Moxifloxacin or Avelox Oral is used to treat acute Bacterial Infection of the Sinuses, Severe Sinusitis caused by Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Severe Sinusitis caused by Haemophilus Influenzae, Severe Sinusitis caused by Moraxella Catarrhalis, Pneumonia caused by Pneumococcus Bacteria, Bacterial Pneumoniae caused by Klebsiella Pneumoniae, Bacterial Pneumonia caused by Haemophilus Influenzae, Bacterial Pneumonia caused by Streptococcus, Pneumonia caused by the Bacteria Moraxella Catarrhalis, Pneumonia caused by Bacteria, Pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma Pneumoniae, Pneumonia caused by the Bacteria Chlamydia, Bacterial Infection with Chronic Bronchitis, Chronic Bronchitis caused by Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Chronic Bronchitis caused by Haemophilus Influenzae, Chronic Bronchitis caused by Haemophilus Parainfluenzae, Chronic Bronchitis caused by Klebsiella Pneumoniae, Chronic Bronchitis caused by Staphylococcus Species, Chronic Bronchitis caused by Moraxella Catarrhalis, Abscess Within the Abdomen, Inflammation and Infection of the Abdomen Lining, Skin Infection, Skin Infection due to Staphylococcus Aureus Bacteria, Skin Infection due to Streptococcus Pyogenes Bacteria, Skin Infection due to Klebsiella Bacteria, Complicated Skin Infection due to Staphyloccus Aureus Bacteria, Complicated Skin Infection due to E. Dosage

The dose of Moxifloxacin or Avelox is 400 mg orally once every 24 hours. The duration of therapy depends on the type of infection.

Side Effects

The side effects Moxifloxacin or Avelox may cause are Nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, weakness, or trouble sleeping may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, inform your doctor immediately. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. However, inform your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: unusual bruising/bleeding, severe/persistent headache, signs of a new infection (e.g., new/persistent fever, persistent sore throat), unusual change in the amount of urine, signs of liver problems (e.g., unusual tiredness, stomach/abdominal pain, persistent nausea/vomiting, yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine). Seek immediate medical attention if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: severe dizziness, fainting, fast/irregular heartbeat, seizures.

Drug Interactions

Do not use Moxifloxacin or Avelox without first talking to your doctor if you or any member of your family have a heart condition known as long QT syndrome. Also, do not use moxifloxacin if you are also using a heart rhythm medicine such as quinidine (Cardioquin, Quinidex, Quinaglute), procainamide (Pronestyl, Procan SR), amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone), sotalol (Betapace), and others. Before taking Moxifloxacin or Avelox, inform your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic; use a diuretic medicine (water pill); have a low level of potassium in your blood (hypokalemia); have heart or liver disease; or have epilepsy or another seizure disorder.

Overdosage

Symptoms of a Moxifloxacin or Avelox overdose may include extreme sleepiness, seizures, tremors, vomiting or diarrhea. Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.

Contraindications

Moxifloxacin is contraindicated in persons with a history of hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin or any member of the quinolone class of antimicrobial agents.

Important

Take Moxifloxacin or Avelox for as many days as it has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated. Moxifloxacin will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu. If you or any member of your family have a heart condition known as long QT syndrome, do not use Moxifloxacin or Avelox without first talking to your doctor. Also, do not use Moxifloxacin or Avelox if you are also using a heart rhythm medicine such as quinidine (Cardioquin, Quinidex, Quinaglute), procainamide (Pronestyl, Procan SR), amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone), sotalol (Betapace), and others.

Certain other drugs can make moxifloxacin less effective when taken at the same time. The following medicines should be taken at least 4 hours after or 8 hours before you take moxifloxacin: antacids that contain magnesium, calcium, or aluminum (such as Tums, Rolaids, Maalox); the ulcer medicine sucralfate (Carafate); vitamin or mineral supplements that contain iron or zinc; didanosine chewable/buffered tablets or pediatric powder for oral solution (ddI, Videx, Videx Pediatric, and others).
