Dovonex Cream (Calcipotriol) is used to help clear up the scaly skin condition known as psoriasis. A synthetic form of vitamin D is available in cream and ointment form, and in a liquid for the scalp. It works by slowing down the growth of skin cells.
Dovonex Cream (Calcipotriol) is indicated to treat and clear the scaly skin condition called as psoriasis.
For psoriasis on the skin, a thin layer of the cream or ointment should be rubbed gently and completely into the affected areas. For psoriasis on the scalp, first the patient should comb the hair to remove scaly debris, and then should gently and completely rub the scalp solution into the affected areas. The patient should avoid getting the solution on the forehead or unaffected parts of the scalp. The patient should not apply more often or use longer than prescribed. This may increase the risk of side effects. Dovonex Cream (Calcipotriol) is for external use only. Contact with the face or eyes should be avoided. This medication should be used regularly to get the most benefit from it. The doctor should be informed if the condition does not improve or if it worsens. The patient should usually begin to see an improvement in the skin condition after 2 weeks of treatment.
The various side effects of the medicine are: burning, itching, skin irritation, tingling skin thinning/discoloration, stretch marks, folliculitis, unusual tiredness, mental/mood changes, unexplained constipation. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, the patient should seek immediate medical attention if notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
Before using this medication, the doctor should be told about all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products that the patient is using, especially of: other products containing vitamin D. Contraindications:
The patient should avoid using Dovonex if it causes an allergic reaction, if the patient is suffering from vitamin D toxicity, or if have high levels of calcium in the blood.
